Early History of Colne
Colne’s history stretches back over a thousand years. The town’s name is believed to be of Celtic origin, possibly derived from an old British word meaning “hill” or “ridge.” It appears in historical records as early as 1120.
In medieval times, Colne was part of the Honour of Clitheroe, a feudal barony under the de Lacy family, and later the Duchy of Lancaster. The area remained largely rural, with small farming communities and scattered settlements.
Industrial Revolution
Colne’s transformation began in the 18th and 19th centuries during the Industrial Revolution. It became a significant hub for cotton weaving, thanks to its access to water from nearby rivers and reservoirs.
- Handloom weaving was common in cottages.
- Later, mills like Primet Mill and Greenfield Mill dominated the landscape.
- The arrival of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (early 19th century) and later the railway boosted trade and transport.
This period saw a rapid population growth and the emergence of terraced housing, chapels, and public institutions.
20th Century Decline and Transition
Colne’s textile industry began to decline in the mid-20th century, like much of Lancashire, due to global competition. Many mills closed or were repurposed.
However, Colne adapted:
